In November 1994, at the first edition of the
MTV European Music Awards George Michael came out of his silence after a long time, giving a touching live performance of a brand new song, “
Jesus to a Child”. The song was a melancholy tribute to Michael's Brazilian friend and lover Anselmo Feleppa who died in March 1993. Michael had been unable to write for long time as a consequence of his grief, but then he penned the words to
Jesus To A Child in little more than an hour, indicating that the time was right to move on with his life.
After the ordeal with
Sony, having Michael stated that he would refuse to release any new material through Epic under his name, he couldn't release the single; David Geffen's U.S. start-up label Dreamworks SKG signed a deal with Sony to release George from his old contract. The deal gave George the chance to release new music with the new label, along with two greatest hits albums and two new singles with Sony within 1998.
"
Jesus to a Child" was released on
Virgin records in January 1996.
The song was Michael's first self-penned hit in his homeland for almost four years and entered the UK singles chart straight at #1 in the same month of release.
It became his first solo single to enter the UK charts at the top, and, on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA, it became the highest new entry (#7) by a British artist for more than 25 years. It was also Michael's longest UK Top 40 single at almost seven minutes long. The exact identity of the song's subject - and the nature of George/Anselmo relationship - was shrouded in innuendo at the time, however, as Michael had not confirmed his homosexuality and did not do so until 1998. The video for “
Jesus to a Child” was a beautiful picture of images recalling loss, pain and sufference. Nowadays, Michael consistently dedicates the song to Feleppa before performing it live.
"
Jesus To A Child" was the first of six singles from the album
Older. It was Michael's sixth UK #1 under his solo name, although only the third as an entirely solo performer.
The second single, out in April 1996, was “
Fastlove”, an energetic tune about the need for gratification and fulfilment without a worry regarding commitment. The song was somewhat unusual for a pop song in that it does not have a defined chorus and that the single version is nearly five minutes long; “
Fastlove” was supported by a visually-futuristic virtual reality related video, still now considered one of the best of George's career.
“
Fastlove” reached #1 in the UK singles chart, spending three weeks at the top spot. In the US, "
Fastlove" peaked at # 8, and has since become a classic in George Michael's catalog. This would go on to be the last time that George Michael reached the top 10 in the US charts.
Following “
Fastlove” George finally released his comeback album
Older, which was his first studio album in six years and only the third of his solo career, even though
Wham! had been split for a whole decade.
Older is the third studio album from George Michael, released May 14, 1996 (see
1996 in music). The album's U.S. and Canada release was particularly notable as it was the first album released by the now-defunct DreamWorks Records.
The six year gap between official releases hurt Michael's commercial momentum in the States. Whilst
Older initially sold well, debuting at number 6 on the
Billboard 200, and reaching soon platinum status for 1 million copies sold, US sales were down on previous releases. Critical reaction to the album were controversial; some critics were decidedly lukewarm, with All Music Guide's Stephen Thomas Erlewine declaring that it "lack[ed] the carefree spark of his earlier work", others declared “
Older” a real masterpiece.
In terms of sales, in the rest of the world “
Older” was a massive success; it debuted at n.1 in the UK top 40 where it spent 92 weeks. It reached gold, platinum and multi platinum status in 37 countries around the world and to date it's been certified 5xPlatinum by
IFPI for sales over 5 millions in Europe.
To date,
Older has reached worldwide sales of approximately 12 million. The album produced an amazing string of hit singles, making Michael become the first artist in UK chart history to have six top 3 singles from one album. In August George released the third single “
Spinning the Wheel”; it entered at n.2 in the UK top 40 being knocked-off the top spot by
Spice Girls's Wannabe.
The other singles off “
Older” were the title track (Older, UK n.3 in January 2007), the U.S. Dance #1 “
Star People '97”, UK n.2 in April 2007 and “
You have been loved”, UK n.2 in September 1997, knocked-off the top spot by Elton's “
Candle in the Wind 97” charity single for Diana.
In October 1996 George performed a whole concert at Three Mills Studios, London for
MTV Unplugged. It was its first long-performance in years, and it stands out as one of the best unplugged concerts
MTV has provided in its history. In the audience there was George's mum.
“
Older” proved George was back in great form, and took him back to the greatest awards in music industry; between 1996 and 1997 he won an
Ivor Novello for Songwriter of the Year, a
Brit Award for Best Male, a
MTV Video Music Award for International Viewers Choice Award (“
Fastlove”) and a
MTV European Music Awards for Best Male.
In 1997, George was dealt another heart-wrenching blow when his beloved mother died of cancer.
