Overview

Served 22 years in the USAF. Earned enlisted rank of staff sergeant,  retired with the rank of Major. Worked satellite operations including launch, tracking, command and control, and remote sensing. Upon retirement, entered education profession. Taught science, was an educational computing strategist, Dean, Principal, Director II. Retired, went to work full time at Touro University Nevada as an associate professor in the school of education.

Years 1953 to 1971

Born March 16th, 1953 in Port Hueneme, CA to Peggy A. and David L. Garner. Attended k-12 schools in California, Virginia and South Carolina. Earned eagle scout in 1968. Graduated from Hueneme High School, Oxnard, CA in 1971. Enlisted in the United States Air Force

Years 1972 to 1993

Attended instrumentation technician training at Lowry AFB in Denver, CO, then was stationed at the Vandenberg Tracking Station at Vandenberg AFB in CA. Married Janene Lynn Oliver on June 24, 1972.  First son, David, born on January 12, 1974. Second son, Kevin, born October 15, 1977. Was selected as the NCO of the year, 1978 for the Space and Missle Systems Organization. Completed the Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management (cum laude) from the University of LaVerne in 1979. Attended the USAF Officer Training School and graduated as a distinguished graduate and second honor graduate. Assigned to Brooks AFB, TX as Chief, Central Base Administation for the Aerospace Medical Division. In 1981, was assigned to the 7361st Munitions Support Squadron, Kleine Brogel AB, Belgium. Earned the Combat Readiness Medal and was selected as the Outstanding United States Air Forces in Europe Administration Officer for the year 1983. Sent back to Denver, CO to attend Space Officer training and USAF Instructor School and graduated with honors from both. Assigned to the 1013th Combat Crew Training Squadron at Peterson AFB, CO. Developed training for the Defense Support Program satellite and the Global Positioning satellite, and planned initial operational testing of the Military Strategic and Tactical Relay (MILSTAR)  satellite. Retired in October, 1993 with the rank of Major.

Years 1994 to present

Moved to Darlington SC. Graduated from Francis Marion University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science (magna cum laude) in Biology. Moved to Las Vegas to begin teaching. Taught at Thurman White Middle School; life science and physical science and developed the first curriculum for 7th grade earth science. Selected to be the school's educational computing strategist. Graduated from UNLV with a Master of Education in Instructional and Curricular Studies in 1998. Completed educational leadership training and was assigned as a Dean at Centennial High School. Selected to particpate in planning of a new school and was subsequently selected to be the prinicipal of the Peterson Center High School, one of eight schools in the nation's model secondary school project, funded in part by Bill & Melinda Gates. Moved to the division of magnet schools and distance education and helped formulate curriculum for the district's first virtual high school. Promoted to Director II in the Business and Finance division and worked at the Director of Organizational Change Managment for the new Enterprise Resource Planning system in the district. Graduated from UNLV with a Doctor of Education degree in Instructional and Curricular Studies in 2007. Retired from the school district and was appointed as associate professor in the Touro University Nevada School of Education. Teaching graduate level courses in curricular studies, educational leadership and upper division courses for the Center for Teaching Excellence.
